Emily Hutton is the horsewoman behind The Clever Cowgirl, a YouTube channel with more than 150,000 subscribers that documents her work giving auction and rescue horses a soft landing — first in Montana’s Gallatin Valley, now in Colorado. In December 2024 she published a video chronicling the first ten days of refeeding a starved auction mare, and midway through, she held up a familiar book: her veterinarian, it turns out, is Stacie.

Refeeding syndrome makes the first days with a starvation case some of the most dangerous, and Emily walks her audience through them day by day. About thirteen minutes in, she turns to the question of veterinary support (lightly edited for clarity):
One thing that is extremely important when dealing with a horse like this is to have a knowledgeable vet. I am extremely lucky that my personal vet has the same passion for unwanted horses as I do. After seeing far too many of these horses, she decided to write a book a few years ago — this is the perfect book to have on hand if you’re thinking about investing in one of these horses and are not really sure where to start.
I started refeeding horses like this long before I met her, but it is such a relief to have a veterinarian that understands this kind of horse — that I can spitball ideas back and forth with as I go through the refeeding process.
